Overview
TORCH is supported by the European Regional Development Fund Interreg Deutschland-Danmark (Grant number 04-3.2-23 2). Using advanced technologies such as spectroscopy and digital image processing, we can reveal hidden details in historical objects, giving us a deeper insight into their origin and condition. TORCH will establish a cross-border collaboration between Denmark and Germany connecting the cultural sector with research environments.
The collaboration will integrate different disciplines such as engineering, materials science, chemistry and informatics, as well as design and creativity, to recreate history that would otherwise not have been possible. With partners such as NanoSYD, Konserveringscenter Vejle, CAU Kiel, Newtec Engineering A/S and Museum für Archäologie Schloss Gottorf, the goal is to transform historical knowledge into a living, interactive experience and to connect past and present through research.

Instruments
We examine the artifacts with various microscopes at the University of Southern Denmark in Sønderborg and at the Christian-Albrechts Universität in Kiel. NEWTEC supports us with their special hyperspectral camera, which can also examine large objects. We therefore have a pool of instruments, some of which can be used on site and some of which are located in laboratories.
The project aims to achieve the following results:
1. We provide access to key regional research facilities and mobile units for non-scientific stakeholders to examine cultural heritage samples.
2. We develop new analytical tools for conservation practice and demonstrate their use.
3. We are creating a portfolio of concrete scientific and technological demonstrators/proofs of concept that are ready for implementation.
4. We are developing a catalogue of actions - restoration and digitisation of the tangible.
