Open Lecture with Professor Keith Devlin: The Emergence and Development of Mathematical Thinking in Human Society

In terms of content, mathematics has changed continually over its 10,000 years existence.

What defines it is the way of thinking the name refers to? Mathematics is, in other words, a way of thinking.

What are the defining characteristics of that way of thinking?

What changes are going on now, and how can mathematics educators prepare today’s students for the mathematics they will encounter and have need to master?

In particular, what is the overall perception of mathematics (as a human enterprise) we want our students to acquire?
