Work with the development of future intelligent products that will make life easier for users

As an MSc in Software Engineering you will work with the development of future intelligent products that will make life easier for users. You can, for instance, become a software developer, IT and systems architect or project manager. You can develop mobile apps, IT security and online solutions.

The Industrial  master programme is a four-year programme on top of a relevant BSc or BEng degree.

Programme structure

An Industrial Master of Science (MSc) in Software Engineering is a four-year programme.

Software is included in many aspects of our daily lives, both in companies and society in general. Therefore, there is a great need for software experts to develop products that are relevant to both consumers and businesses and which meet the needs of society.

During your studies in engineering, you learn to develop state-of-the-art software products and services. Simultaneously, you will be able to improve the products and services we know today. You will learn how technology is best used to develop efficient solutions – not only from a technical point of view but also from a user perspective.

Five subject areas

The study programme has four subject areas:

  • Modeling and Simulation
  • Mobile and Ubiquitous  Computing
  • Software Ecosystems
  • Data Science
  • Innovative Software Solutions

Modelling and Simulation

Modeling and Simulation is the most widely used operations research / systems engineering technique for designing new systems and optimizing the performance of existing systems. In one way or another, just about every engineering or scientific field uses simulation as an exploration, modeling, or analysis technique. The subject area is included to provide students with basic knowledge of modeling and simulation approaches and experience of using them to solve real problems.

Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing

Software is today used on the move on smartphones or watches. This enables a wealth of opportunities for engineering new software solutions.

Software Ecosystems

Software exists in an ecosystem of applications, systems and resources. Well-functioning software will be designed for the ecosystem and take into account continuous changes in the ecosystem and the interplay between each element.

Data Science

Data science is the extraction of knowledge from data. There will be particular focus on collection, filtering, processing, imaging and distribution of data. The development of effective and ethical methods of using enormous amounts of data is a huge challenge for science and for society as a whole.

Innovative Software Solutions

Software makes it possible to create new and unexpected solutions in the automation of activities and processes that were impossible with mechanical or analogue technologies. Read more about the programme structure.

Study environment

Each year more than 1500 international students from all over the world choose to study at the University of Southern Denmark, so you will become part of a lively international student environment.

We believe that engineers of today must have a global perspective and experience and we encourage international as well as Danish students to spend one or two semesters abroad on an internship or as exchange students.

The Faculty of Engineering has adopted a student-centred approach to learning, and teaching is based on problem based project work. Students participate significantly in class and carry out project work in small teams.

Career opportunities for Master of Science in Engineering

As an Industrial Master of Science (MSc) in Software Engineering you will work with the development of future intelligent products that will make life easier for users. You can, for instance, become a software developer, IT and systems architect or project manager. You can develop mobile apps, IT security and online solutions. More on career opportunities.
