Den psykologiske indvirkning af bankrøveri undersøges ved at sammenlignede generelle niveauer af traumatisering og somatisering hos ansatte, der har væretudsat for bankrøveri af forskellig grad og på forskellige tidspunkter, og en kontrolgruppe af ansatte. Der blev kontrolleret for udvalgte risikofaktorer i forhold til udviklingen af posttraumatisk stress og det blev fundet, at kun den gruppe, der havde været direkte udsat for bankrøveri, havde en signifikant højere score på generel traumatisering og somatisering i forhold til kontrolgruppen. Det konkluderes, at udsættelse for bankrøveri virker til, at være særligt forbundet med psykologisk belastning.

Studiet indikerer, at ofre med høje niveauer af ”Acute Stress Disorder”(ASD) haren forhøjet risiko for at udvikle”Post Traumatic Stress Disorder”(PTSD).
Screeningsprocedurer i forbindelse med bankrøverier bør derfor have fokus på blandt andet sværhedsgrad af ASD. Derudover ses det, at negative tanker (”cognition”) om selvet, også er med til at forudsige, og spiller en afgørende rolle, i udviklingen af PTSD, som følge af bankrøveri. Dette antyder en mulighed, for udviklingen af forebyggende kognitive interventioner målrettet bankansatte, med fokus på, at ændre negativ tanker om selvet.

Studiet viser, at et mindretal af bankansatte udvikler ASD (11,1%) ogPTSD(6,2%) som følge af bankrøveri. Dog udvikler en stor andel subkliniske symptomerpå ASD og PTSD, selvom de ikke opfylder de fulde diagnoser. SærligtASD sværhedsgraden og negative tanker om egen person og evner synes, atkunne forudsige PTSD sværhedsgraden efter et bankrøveri. Det anbefales derfor,atAkut Stress forstyrrelse bruges til, at screene for PTSD efterbankrøverier.

Med udgangspunkt i ofre for bankrøveri og voldtægt, undersøges fireforskelligemodeller for den latente struktur af Akut Stress Forstyrrelse (ASD). Det blevfundet, at ASD strukturen bedst forklares ud fra en fem faktor struktur, der inddeler elementer af dysforisk eller forøget vagtsomhed(”arousal”)i to forskellige faktorer. Fundet skal ses, som supplement til debatten, om hvordan ASD bedst konceptualiseres, før lanceringen af DSM-5.

Undersøger hyppigheden af og hvad der forudsiger Akut Stress Forstyrrelse (ASD) og fandt, at hyppigheden af ASD (14,5%) var den samme som ved andre former for interpersonelle overgreb. Der viste sig, at graden af oplevet hjælpeløshed og oplevet trussel på livet (under bankrøveriet), samt graden af oplevet sikkerhed efter bankrøveriet,spillede ind på sværhedsgraden af ASD symptomer. Der peges på,at”oplevet sikkerhed” muligvis er et af kerne elementerne og et fællestræk ved PTSD og ASD.
