LabSTEM+ was concluded on 31 December 2025 after a three-year project period that has had significant impact on the development and anchoring of integrated STEM education in Denmark. The project was launched on 1 January 2023 with funding from the Novo Nordisk Foundation, building on valuable experiences and results from the preceding LabSTEM project (2020–2022), which was also supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation as well as the Region of Southern Denmark.

The LabSTEM projects have aimed to enhance the quality of teaching in mathematics and science in lower secondary education and in upper secondary and vocational education. In the first project period, we also established laboratories in a number of early childhood education settings, where STEM activities were developed in collaboration with pedagogical staff. The project is based on the Laboratory Model—hence the name ‘Lab’ combined with ‘STEM’ (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), which constitutes the project’s core focus. 

Among its outcomes, the project resulted in the book STEM Didactics (in Danish), published by the University Press of Southern Denmark in 2024. Read more about the book here.

Another very concrete outcome of the project is a wide range of STEM activities and teaching sequences developed in the laboratories across the region. A selection of these has been compiled into four booklets aimed respectively at early childhood education, primary and lower secondary school, upper secondary school, and vocational education. All activities are accessible from this page under STEM activities. The activities emerged from the work carried out in the laboratories, where participants developed them and subsequently tested them in practice. They can be used as they are or serve as a starting point for developing your own ideas.
