Structure of the programme

The Master’s Degree Programme in Data Science takes two years to complete, and each academic year is divided into two semesters.

The first 3 semesters consist of fundamental courses, specializing courses and an elective module. In the fourth semester, you work on your Master’s thesis project.

The course of study depends on which of the following areas of specialization you choose.

This area of specialization qualifies you to carry out data processing and make informed decisions on the basis of large amounts of data, as well as to understand the use of modern technology and innovation as a competitive parametre in manufacturing companies and companies within the service sector.

The profile is tailored towards students with a Bachelor’s degree in economics, business administration or the like.

This area of specialization qualifies you to work with technology on a value-based and people-oriented basis. Moral and ethical choices must be made every day, and value can be created through linguistic and image-based data.

The profile is tailored towards students with a Bachelor’s degree within the humanities, business or social sciences.

This area of specialization gives you general competences within information and communication technologies.

You will gain a deeper knowledge of information and communication technology systems, including computer networks and cloud computing; programming; a broad introduction to algorithms and data structures; as well as network and cyber security.

Example of a timetable

Below is an example of what a weekly timetable might look like for a student on the first semester of the Master’s Degree Programme in Data Science. There are, of course, breaks throughout the day, for example the academic quarter. Please note that the timetable may vary from week to week and that teaching activities may be scheduled on weekdays in the hours between 8.15 and 18.00.

The programme regulations are the legal foundation of the programme. They describe the rules applying to the programme, including the admission requirements, the programme structure, the qualifications you will achieve, and a summary of the general rules applying to all students.

As a student, you are responsible for keeping up to date with the programme regulations, which may be revised once every year – any changes typically come into effect on 1 September.

A course description is the formal description of a course, in which you can read about the aim and contents of the course, teaching methods, the expected workload and the form of the exam.

The Master’s Degree Programme in Data Science includes the opportunity to do a company project during the second or third semester, as part of the elective module.

A company project is a well-defined project which is done on part-time in a company/organisation, and which has a scope of 10 ECTS. A company project places demands on learning on par with other courses at the university.

Both an university supervisor and a company supervisor are associated with the project, which must take a specific problem as its starting point. The study board must approve the project description before you can start working on the project.

Company projects are always unpaid and you are not employed by the company/organisation during the project period.

On the fourth semester of the programme, you will work on your Master’s thesis project, which has a scope of 30 ECTS.

You will typically be affiliated with your supervisor’s research group, who will be able to counsel and guide you in your literature search and your collection and processing of research data.
