Ranking criteria

This programme has a limited number of study places. Applicants with a legal claim for admission are admitted first. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available study places, the remaining places are allocated between two sorting groups, non-fee-paying and fee-paying applicants. All applicants are assessed according to the following ranking criteria.

Key subject areas. For each of the below subject areas included in your qualifying Bachelor’s degree 1 point is given:

  • Minimum 10 ECTS in American literature
  • Minimum 10 ECTS in American history
  • Minimum 10 ECTS in American politics and/or sociology
  • Minimum 10 ECTS in theory of science and scientific methods
  • Minimum 10 ECTS in a Bachelor’s project or similar individual project

Statement of academic interest. As a part of your application, you must include a statement of academic interest in English, in which you must account for the following:

  • The relevance of any occupational experience you may have in regard to the Master’s degree programme
  • The relevance of other experience (e.g. other education, voluntary work or studies abroad) in regard to the Master’s degree programme
  • Knowledge you have about certain areas with relevance to the Master’s degree programme

Relevant occupational experience, other relevant experience, and knowledge about relevant areas can elicit 1 point each.

Points for key subject areas are added together with points for relevant experience and knowledge as described in your statement of academic interest, resulting in a total score of 0-7 points. Available study places are offered to the applicants who achieve the highest total score. In the event of a tie, study places will be offered to the applicants who have the highest collective sum of ECTS points in the key subject areas.

Application deadlines

The application deadlines for study start 1. September are:

  • 1. February for non-EU/EEA citizens
