Aquatic Microbial and Molecular Ecology (AMME)

Background

The Aquatic Microbial and Molecular Ecology (AMME) course that has been running successfully since 1996, provides intensive training in aquatic microbial ecology, combining lectures, laboratory exercises, and hands-on experience with modern analytical and molecular techniques. The 2027 course will take place at the University of Southern Denmark from 15–29 August 2027.

Course Approach

Theoretical and practical training in biogeochemistry and molecular techniques with emphasis on the ecology of marine microbial systems.

The course includes 22 lectures, 2 excursions, 7 practical exercises (~ 50 hours in the laboratory) and theoretical discussions in study groups. To pass the course a report must be completed and approved by the teaching team.

Course Topics

  1. Prokaryote diversity, population dynamics, and energetics
  2. Carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, iron, manganese, and phosphorus biogeochemistry
  3. Molecular techniques and bioinformatics

Time

August, 15-29 2027 (both days inclusive)

Textbook

Canfield, D.E., Kristensen, E. & Thamdrup, B. (2005): Aquatic Geomicrobiology. Elsevier Academic Press, Amsterdam.

A laboratory compendium.

Additional reading will be presented at the course.
