Lotte Dyhrberg O'Neill

My name is Lotte O’Neill, and I am an associate professor at SDUUP.

I am educated in the field of medical education, but I also have research and teaching experience in the wider field of higher education.

I am particularly interested in assessment, testing, different assessment formats (e.g. multiple choice tests, admission examinations and more), evaluation instruments and activating teaching methods in large rooms (for example team-based learning and case-based learning).

When I offer assistance within case-based learning (CBL), I would for instance offer courses  about the good framework for CBL and the role of the teacher as a facilitator of the students’ discussions. The course, which is a half-day attendance course with specific preparatory assignments available on itslearning, includes a mix of assignments and lectures. We look at the origins of CBL and how it could be relevant in participants’ own teaching contexts. Participants also get help to start working on a plan for a CBL teaching session in their own context. At a later session they will have the opportunity to receive feedback from other participants and me. Participants who want to take the follow-up course CBL 2 can complete the planned CBL session with the possibility of supervision and reflection. Such written reflection on a teaching experience/educational development is perfect for your teaching portfolio as an example/evidence of educational development and reflected practice!

I also teach how to construct high quality multiple choice questions (MCQ) and how to use them in different contexts and for different purposes. Søren Frank, Professor and former Head of studies of the Comparative Literature Studies study programme, has received help with the use of MCQ. In Comparative Literature, a new assessment format has been introduced, consisting of 7 MCQ tests in the span of a course consisting of 7 teaching sessions and presentations. “We have greatly benefited from SDUUP when conceptualizing the MCQs - Lotte held a workshop about MCQ, tips and pitfalls etc., and subsequently Pernille Stenkil Hansen has given us technical IT-support setting up the MCQ in Blackboard and ITSL.”  SDUUP has therefore given both pedagogical and practical support.
