Information for relatives

Opportunity for consultation with a doctor

The Department of Forensic Medicine is happy to offer support to relatives and to individuals who are undergoing or have undergone an examination at the department. We will do our best to explain the procedures involved and the results of the examinations. The department is available to provide information about findings from autopsies or clinical forensic examinations, in accordance with the general and case-specific agreements made with the police.

This information can be provided over the phone or through an in-person meeting with the responsible doctor, which can be arranged by calling the department at +45 6550 3000. In some cases, it is possible to offer this service outside of normal working hours. Outside regular office hours (after 15.30), calls are answered by the on-call forensic technician, who can help arrange an appointment.

Saying goodbye to the deceased

In connection with a death, relatives often wish to see the deceased. We fully understand this and are happy to help. However, police investigations may delay this process, as the police can decide that the deceased may not be viewed until the medico-legal external examination has been completed. The department cannot make exceptions to this rule. If relatives wish to see the deceased before the examination, they must contact the police officer in charge of the case—typically from Fyn Police or South and Southern Jutland Police.

After the external examination has been carried out, an appointment to view the deceased can be made by contacting the on-call forensic technician at +45 6550 3000.

Additional examinations

Most autopsies and clinical forensic examinations include additional tests. These may include microscopic examination of the organs, or analysis of blood and urine samples for medication, drugs or alcohol, to assess whether there was any influence or even poisoning involved.

The results of these tests are not available immediately after the examination. We do our utmost to respond to inquiries from both relatives and the police as quickly as possible, without compromising the quality of our work. In complex cases, final results may take several months to be completed.
