IRCA scientific film festival for high school students from Denmark and Northern Germany.
2015 is the International Year of Light and thus all short films of the film contest had to have light as their overall topic. In this inspiration catalogue you can read something about the manifold possibilities of application that light has, what light is being used for and how it is used in science.
Light …
- is the origin of the universe
- helps us see the world
- is extremely fast. If you would fly around the world at the speed of light, you would circumfere the world 7.5 times in just one second
- consists of particles called photons
- consists of electromagnetic waves - according to Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695)
- from the stars is travelling through the universe, years after it has been born on a far away star. One night it hits the earth. Then we can see the star where the light came from. The distance the light is travelling in one year is called a light year
- has different colours. You can see them in a rainbow or through a prism. Every colour has its own wavelength (distance between the wave tops). Some colours are visible (red to blue) and some are invisible (infrared and ultraviolet)
- can be used in art & culture due to the different colours
- can improve the physical and mental quality of life
- is paramount for scientific progress
- has an imprinted barcode, which is called spectral lines.
