IOB Takes Another Step Up in the World Elite

A new ranking places SDU's Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics (IOB) as the fifth-best sports institute in the world.

IOB has an impressive research environment that can compete with the best in the world.

This has once again been recognized through the 'Academic Ranking of World Universities' (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking.

The Shanghai Ranking is the most recognized annual ranking of the world's universities, first published in 2003 by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The 2024 version ranks approximately 2,000 universities.’

Since 2016, there has been a ranking of 'Sport Science Schools and Departments', to which IOB belongs. In the field of Sport Sciences, ARWU measures 300 universities, 12 of which are purely sports universities.

Strong Research Environment and Relevant Scientific Knowledge

In 2022, IOB was ranked 9th and in 2023, 6th - and the current ranking is the highest, IOB has ever been had on the ranking list.

Head of Department Jens Troelsen is pleased that IOB has taken another step up and is now ranked in the top five:

“We can be proud that as a department we once again place ourselves at the very top internationally”, he says.

“It shows that we have an exceptionally strong research environment, and I find it particularly commendable that our research is so frequently cited. It is a sign of significant research impact - and contributes to giving us such a great ranking. We deliver highly relevant scientific knowledge that other researchers find valuable”, emphasizes Jens Troelsen.

About the Shanghai Ranking

The Shanghai Ranking was originally developed and published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2003, making it the first global university ranking with many different indicators.

ARWU ranks the universities' 'Sports Science Departments and Schools' based on several key indicators:

1. Research output in Sport Science journals indexed in the Web of Science.
2. Citation impact of publications (measuring research influence).
3. International collaboration in research.
4. Articles published in top-tier journals.
5. The number of papers in high-impact journals relative to the institution's size.
