Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics ranked second-best in the world
The University of Southern Denmark moves up to second place in the ShanghaiRanking 2025.
The Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics (IOB) at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) has achieved its highest-ever position in the ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools and Departments – the most recognised international ranking of research environments in sport science.
In the recently published 2025 edition, SDU’s department ranks second in the world – surpassed only by Deakin University in Australia.
Global recognition of Danish sports research
ShanghaiRanking evaluates universities worldwide based on objective indicators such as the number of publications in high-ranking journals, citation rates, and the proportion of publications produced in collaboration with international partners.
The second-place ranking reflects a high volume of scientific output and outstanding research quality at the Department of Sports Science and Clinical Biomechanics.
- This ranking is strong, direct proof of our staff’s passion, talent and sustained efforts over many years. We are building on a solid foundation established by former Head of Department Jørgen Povlsen, and we’re continuing that legacy with research that truly makes a difference. I’m proud that we – measured by citations and publications – are producing research at the highest international level, says Head of Department Jens Troelsen.
He emphasises that this progress has taken place during a period of financial challenges.
- That makes the ranking even more remarkable. Despite having fewer resources, both the quality and productivity of our research have increased. This is a clear sign of a strong research environment with significant scientific impact and societal relevance, he adds.
Research with real-world impact
Research at the department covers a wide spectrum. It includes clinical research on the musculoskeletal system, play and movement among children and adults, as well as training and treatment for patients with chronic conditions and lifestyle-related diseases.
Through partnerships with municipalities, hospitals and international organisations, this knowledge is translated into concrete public health initiatives and recommendations, backed by institutions such as the Danish Health Authority and the World Health Organization (WHO).
- Being ranked second in the world is both a tremendous honour and a responsibility. We will continue to deliver research of the highest quality and contribute to solutions that can improve health and well-being – both in Denmark and internationally, says Jens Troelsen.
