Professor of Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease at SDU and OUH

The University of Southern Denmark (SDU) has appointed MD, PhD, MD. Casper Steenholdt to become clinical professor of medical gastroenterology with a special focus on chronic inflammatory bowel disease.

By Tomas Homburg, , 5/12/2025

The appointment is made in connection with the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and in collaboration with the Department of Medical Gastroenterology S at Odense University Hospital (OUH), where he will also take up the position of chief physician.

For more than 20 years, Casper Steenholdt has contributed significantly to research into chronic inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. His overall vision is to strengthen advanced medical treatment for the benefit of patients, healthcare and society. Through groundbreaking methodological and clinical studies, he has gained in-depth insight into clinical pharmacology and biological treatment, particularly in the field of therapeutic pharmacovigilance.

His work has helped to spread the use of this approach globally; also, for the treatment of other chronic inflammatory diseases. Casper Steenholdt has also shown that discontinuation of well-functioning biological treatment entails a significant risk of disease recurrence and should be avoided. In addition, he has focused on the development of optimal patient pathways with continuous monitoring of disease activity, patient compliance, quality of life and management of chronic fatigue.

Casper Steenholdt comes from a position at Herlev Hospital and in his role as clinical professor in Odense, he will focus on three key research areas, in collaboration with both national and international partners such as the reNEW Stem Cell Center at the University of Copenhagen, the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at Freie Universität in Berlin and the BEAT-IBD research center at OUH.

The first focus area is the development and application of innovative therapies based on stem cells and tissue regeneration with the potential to break the current 'treatment ceiling', where a large group of patients experience insufficient efficacy. The second is to optimise the use of existing treatments by means of, among other things, therapeutic pharmacovigilance, biomarkers and new use of already approved medicines – all with a focus on increased efficacy, fewer side effects and lower costs. Finally, he will strengthen research into patients' own experiences of illness and treatment, including quality of life and disease surveillance.

Casper Steenholdt (b. 1980) became an M.D. in 2007 and is a newly qualified specialist in gastroenterology. He obtained his PhD in 2013 and his doctorate in 2016 from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Privately, he is married to Louisa, and together they have a son Markus, 2 years old. His spare time is often spent in nature on runs with the greyhound Kalle.
