New maritime center at SDU brings together research across disciplines
Nearly 100 researchers across five faculties are working on maritime challenges at SDU. A new SDU Maritime Centre will bring this expertise together and strengthen collaboration with industry and Blue Denmark.
Nearly 100 researchers across five faculties at the University of Southern Denmark are addressing maritime challenges – from green fuels and robotics to maritime law, health at sea, literature, and history.
Now, a new SDU Maritime Center will consolidate this expertise, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration, and make it easier for the industry to access the university's maritime knowledge.
Maritime expertise across disciplines
The new center will not be a new physical building. Instead, it will consolidate and connect maritime research activities and competencies across SDU's various faculties.
”We are not building a new structure where everyone will be gathered. Instead, the center will consolidate maritime research activities across the different faculties,” says Centre Head Marie Lützen.
The goal is to make it easier for researchers to connect across disciplines while also providing companies and organizations with a single point of access to relevant expertise at SDU.
A single point of access to maritime knowledge
The center will serve as a single point of access to SDU's maritime expertise, making it easier for the industry to find relevant researchers, establish collaborations, and develop new research, innovation, and educational projects.
Supporting future maritime solutions
The center is supported by The Danish Maritime Fund and aims to strengthen SDU's contribution to the maritime sector and the development of future solutions for Blue Denmark.
Rector Jens Ringsmose sees the new center as an important step in strengthening SDU's contribution to a sector that is highly significant for Denmark.
”The maritime sector is extraordinarily important for Denmark, and it must remain so in the future,” says Jens Ringsmose.
Lotte G. Lundberg from The Danish Maritime Fund also highlights SDU's role in developing future maritime solutions and looks forward to following the center's work.
New opportunities for engineering research and innovation
In addition to the maritime center, SDU has received support for two additional initiatives: incubation grants for maritime student startups and a research project on robot-based laser hybrid welding at LSP – Large Structure Production.
The initiatives support research, innovation, and entrepreneurship within the maritime sector and create new opportunities for collaboration between SDU and the industry.
