Market-based governance to leverage occupational safety and health in agri-food supply chains

Over the last four decades, companies are increasingly dependent on both national and international supply chains, and the drive to be competitive tends companies to push pressures upstream in the supply chain, often leading to hazardous labour conditions that violate basic human- and workers´ rights. There is therefore an increasing awareness of occupational safety and health in companies´ supply chains, and companies use a number of market-based instruments and practices to govern suppliers compliance with social and environmental standards.

The objective of the PhD is to provide research-based knowledge about how market-based governance practices contribute to the improvement of working conditions and occupational safety and health in agri-food supply chains. The project aims to contribute to the improvement of the overall initiatives concerned with working environment in Denmark.

PhD research question:

Main Question:

  • How can market-based governance practices contribute to the improvement of OSH activities in Danish companies in the agri-food supply chain?

Sub-questions:

  • What kind of market-based governance practices are applied in the agri-food supply chain to improve or maintain working conditions?
  • Which barriers and drivers have an impact on the way market-based governance is applied in agri-food companies?
  • How do marked-based governance practices that are applied in the agri-food supply chains interact with regulatory practices of the Danish working environment?

The PhD is funded by the Danish Working Environment Research Fund.
