New Research Grant to Explore How Social Media Shapes Young People’s Futures

Professor Susana Tosca from the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science receives a grant of DKK 7 million from the Independent Research Fund Denmark for the project "Under Pressure: Mediated Aspiration and Young People’s Well-being".

By Caroline Zoffmann Jessen, , 10/2/2026

Every day, young people are exposed to countless images and videos that portray what a successful life, an exciting future, or personal achievement might look like. While social media can inspire and motivate, it can also create pressure and uncertainty, as many of these ideals can feel difficult to live up to.

The project will examine how social media influences young people’s perceptions of themselves and their future, and how these perceptions affect their well-being.

The research team will follow Danish students through surveys, interviews, digital ethnography, and workshops. The aim is to generate new insights into the relationship between social media use and young people’s well-being, as well as the mechanisms that can contribute to both inspiration and feelings of pressure.

As part of the project, the researchers will also develop practical resources for schools and educators to support their work with children and young people.

Professor Susana Tosca will lead the project in collaboration with Co-Principal Investigator and Associate Professor Eva Lykkegaard.
