Research areas

The research in this group focuses on developing tools for personalized medicine in chronic inflammatory diseases.

The Molecular Diagnostics and Clinical Research Unit (MOK) is affiliated with the Department of Medical Diseases at Sygehus Sønderjylland (Hospital South Jutland) and focuses on research within chronic inflammatory diseases, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). The research unit is interdisciplinary, consisting of researchers with backgrounds in medicine, biomedical sciences, pharmacology, nutrition, public health, and more. The unit was established in collaboration with the Institute of Regional Health Research at the University of Southern Denmark and includes both PhD students and senior researchers with expertise in quantitative and qualitative methods.

Mission

The development of personalized medicine is at the core of MOK's research, where multiple disciplines converge in the application of multifaceted methods. We contribute to the development and knowledge of personalized medicine by characterizing each patient in-depth on a molecular, lifestyle, and clinical level.

Projects:

Some of the substantial projects from our research group include:

  • Identify lifestyle factors, including diet, which can improve the course of the disease
  • Detect molecular signatures that can predict the outcome of medical treatment for the individual patient
  • Understanding the relationships and differences between chronic inflammatory diseases to unravel the underlying mechanism of these diseases
  • Examining protein markers that can predict the course of the disease in patients with chronic bowel inflammation
  • Detect molecular signatures that can diagnose chronic bowel inflammation earlier and more accurately
  • Describe different patients’ pathways using data from registers
  • Combine data from registries with the characteristics from molecular signatures of individual patients to identify different patient pathways and understand the underlying biology of the disease

In addition to these research programs, we collaborate on many other projects with a multitude of different external partners.
