Research Unit of Haematology

Research areas

The Treat@Home research program is a Danish national, interdisciplinary collaboration involving healthcare professionals across regions and sectors, conducted in close partnership with patients and their relatives.

The aim of the program is to generate evidence on the feasibility, effectiveness, and implementation of home-based interventions for patients with hematological malignancies in Denmark. In addition, the program investigates clinical practice, safety, organizational frameworks, health economics, as well as associated barriers and facilitating factors related to the delivery and management of home-based treatment.

Advances in targeted therapies and immunotherapies have improved survival among patients with hematological malignancies. At the same time, these treatments are often associated with a substantial symptom burden, reduced quality of life, and unpredictable treatment trajectories, thereby increasing the demand for hematological healthcare services. Enhancing quality of life and the ability to maintain everyday life with minimal time spent in hospital is of considerable value to the individual patient and also of significant benefit to society. Treat@Home can support and contribute knowledge to the transformation of the Danish healthcare system from hospital-centered models toward decentralized, patient-centered care pathways.

Overview of ongoing research projects

PhD Student: Christian Landbo

Primary Supervisor: Associate Professor, Ph.D., Nurse Kristina Nørskov

Co-Supervisors: Professor, Ph.D., Nurse Mary Jarden; Postdoctoral Researcher, Ph.D., Nurse Iben Husted Nielsen; Associate Professor, Ph.D., Consultant Anne Louise Tøllbøll Sørensen

Objective: To explore and evaluate the practice of home-based treatment with Cytarabine across Danish hematology departments, thereby generating knowledge to support a nationally consistent implementation. The project will examine feasibility, patient safety, quality of life, costs, organizational factors, and perceived barriers and opportunities among patients, relatives, and healthcare professionals.
