Agroferm is a small biotechnology company located in Esbjerg, on the west coast of Jutland. The company was established in 2004 as a result of cooperation between private companies and the University of Southern Denmark. In relation to the LIV project, the company is interesting for a number of reasons. Firstly, the paper highlights how the joint entrepreneurial process leading to the formation of the company was instrumental in having a biotech company formed outside the major urban centres. Secondly, the history of the company suggests that its strategic importance to the wider agro industrial complex has been important for its survival and growth in an industry dominated by a relatively few global players. Thirdly, the advantages and disadvantages of being localized in Esbjerg are considered.
