Summary of CLF Report 1/2010

This report analyzes the development of unemployment in peripheral municipalities in Denmark. Recent data shows that the unemployment rate for peripheral areas have converged to that of the rest of the country. It is also shown that the factors behind this development are a combination of a decreasing workforce, and almost constant levels of employment in the peripheral areas. This is contrasted with the development in the rest of the country which has increasing employment and a close to constant workforce.

The recent development in unemployment rates following the financial crisis is also discussed. It is shown that unemployment is increasing in all of the country with fairly similar unemployment rates for the peripheral municipalities and other municipalities.
