SDU BuildIQ Lab - SDU Smart Campus Living Lab

SDU-CEI BuildIQ Lab

Introduction

The SDU Smart Campus Living Lab, hosted by the SDU Center for Energy Informatics in close collaboration with SDU Technical Services at the University of Southern Denmark, is a state-of-the-art platform for accelerating innovation in energy and smart building technologies. Embedded in a real campus setting, it transforms two interconnected university buildings into a full-scale “living laboratory.” Here, researchers, industry partners, and policymakers co-develop and test next-generation solutions for intelligent, sustainable buildings—all under actual operating conditions.

Located on SDU’s main campus in Odense, the living lab focuses on practical, occupant-centered research. Building OU44, a highly energy-efficient showcase facility completed in 2015, and Building OU33, a retrofitted office environment, together create a diverse testbed that spans both leading-edge construction and older structures. By fusing physical infrastructure with digital platforms, the SDU Smart Campus Living Lab uniquely bridges fundamental research and real-world application—advancing the green transition in the built environment.
