Building Smarter Futures: EIA 2025 Summer School Delivers Practical IoT and Cloud Training

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – December 1-2, 2025 – The Energy Informatics Academy (EIA) Summer School 2025 on “Harnessing IoT and Cloud Computing for Intelligent Buildings” brought together students, researchers, and professionals eager to explore how digitalization is reshaping the built environment. Designed as a mix of expert-led lectures and hands-on exercises, the program offered participants a practical introduction to the technologies driving intelligent building digitalization and energy efficiency. Among others, the program focused on:

  • Live Data Acquisition using MQTT and Python from real sensors
  • Time-Series Data Management with InfluxDB
  • Interactive Analytics through Grafana dashboards
  • Data-Driven Insights for smarter building control and energy savings

Working in UNITEN’s Advanced Learning Lab, participants interacted with real sensor installations and IoT gateways, replicating workflows developed at SDU’s Smart Campus Living Lab and successfully adapted to Malaysia’s climate and infrastructure. Attendees gained first-hand insight into scalable monitoring, anomaly detection, and decision support systems that underpin sustainable and intelligent buildings.

The Summer School was powered by two pioneering living labs: SDU BuildIQ Lab in Denmark and UNITEN Smart Building Living Lab in Malaysia. This unique “lab-to-lab” collaboration offered participants a rare opportunity to experience how an IoT-to-cloud pipeline scales across campuses and climates, bridging European and Asian contexts.

This two-day event set the stage for the Energy Informatics Academy Conference (EI.A 2025), held at UNITEN from December 3–5, continuing the momentum toward innovation in energy informatics and digital transformation of the built environment.

By bridging two continents and two living labs, the Summer School demonstrated how global collaboration can accelerate innovation in intelligent building technologies and support the transition toward sustainable campuses worldwide.
