The Centre was established in 2014 and has since gained extensive knowledge and experience in shared decision making, as well as developing, testing and evaluating decision support tools.
As part of a cultural shift towards patient-centred care, the Centre for Shared Decision Making aims to:
- Facilitate competence development and the implementation of shared decision making in clinical practice
- Initiate multidisciplinary research projects involving collaboration across organisations
- Disseminate knowledge about shared decision making
The Centre for Shared Decision Making therefore focuses on three main areas, each of which contributes equally to the Centre’s activities and mission.
Research at the Centre for Shared Decision Making focuses on the following areas, which we will continue to strengthen in the coming years:
- Relatives and shared decision making
- Healthcare professionals’ attitudes towards and experiences of practising shared decision making
- Development of decision support tools
- Research into the implementation of shared decision making
- Health inequalities and health literacy
- Implementation research
- Patient involvement, with a focus on increasing patients’ knowledge of and engagement in shared decision making
- Artificial intelligence
- Development of methods for measuring shared decision making

Organisation of research into shared decision making
An advisory board has been appointed, comprising national and international experts in shared decision making, patient-centred care and communication, as well as representatives of patients and relatives. The Centre also has an internal interdisciplinary research group and an extensive international network.
Researchers, PhD students, postdocs, project managers and project staff are affiliated with the Centre, with Lea Lund having overall responsibility for research.
