Cand.negot. in Business, Language and Culture

Moving to Odense led me to a robotics startup

Tijmen Spiertz holds an MA in Business, Language and Culture (Cand.Negot) and is today CEO and co-founder of the robotics company ROICO, where he works on developing robotic solutions for painting work in the construction industry.

“I completed my master’s degree in cand.negot. at SDU, specializing in international market relations. Before that, I earned a bachelor’s degree in international business and management studies in the Netherlands. After finishing my bachelor’s, I knew I wanted to continue my education, but I never imagined I would end up in a robotics company. It wasn’t until I moved to Odense that I was introduced to the robotics environment, and that world opened to me.

One of the things that had the greatest impact on me becoming part of starting a robotics company was meeting other students from technical and robotics-related programs. I met one of my co-founders on the very first day of my studies, and shortly after, more joined through the student environment and the international network around SDU. If I hadn’t been in Odense, I would probably never have become part of a robotics startup.

The idea for our company emerged during our studies. We took part in SDU’s entrepreneurship program, and gradually the company began to take shape.

The idea for our company emerged during our studies. We had to paint an apartment ourselves when moving out. It was more time-consuming and physically demanding than we expected. That made us think: If it’s tough for us over one weekend, what must it be like for those who do it every day? That became the starting point for researching the market, speaking with painters, manufacturers, and construction companies, and developing the first technical ideas. We took part in SDU’s entrepreneurship program, and gradually the company began to take shape.

Today, we are three co-founders, and I am the CEO. My co-founders are robotics engineers, while I contribute business insight. My day-to-day work is very varied: I work on partnerships, funding applications, finances, and relationships, but I’m also out on construction sites with the robot. No two days are the same.

I use a lot of what I learned during my studies, especially cross-cultural collaboration, relationship-building, and working with market analysis and finance. We are an international team, and every day I navigate between different professional disciplines and cultures. In addition, I apply methods for market analysis, budgeting, and written communication.

What motivates me the most is the opportunity to make a real difference for the people working in the industry. Our goal is not to replace people, but to develop technology that supports and relieves them. Building a company is a demanding process, but also incredibly rewarding.”
