Sensor Lab helps companies develop, optimise and evaluate sensing solutions for quality control, environmental monitoring, healthcare, food production and industrial processes. We support both new sensor-based products and improvements to existing solutions, from initial ideas to performance verification.

You can assemble, train and evaluate sensing systems under controlled and realistic conditions. We expose sensors to relevant samples and collect data for models that recognise and classify what the sensors measure. Chemical sensing, optical inspection and machine learning can be combined to provide insight into system capabilities, performance and limitations.

What the laboratory can help with

  • Many companies have products or processes where odour is an important indicator of quality, safety, or condition, but transforming smell into reliable data can be challenging. At the Sensor Lab, we help companies develop and train electronic nose systems by exposing them to relevant samples and collecting data under controlled conditions.

    The resulting models can be used to identify, classify, or monitor target odours with documented performance, supporting product development and quality assurance.

  • Human sensory evaluation can be subjective, time-consuming, and difficult to scale. We help companies develop sensor-based solutions that automatically assess products using chemical sensing, optical inspection, or a combination of both.

    By training systems with representative samples, companies can establish repeatable and objective quality control procedures that improve consistency, reduce costs, and support process automation.

  • The Sensor Lab is located at the Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), Alsion, Sønderborg, Denmark.

  • Price and terms depend on the nature and scope of the project. We offer flexible collaboration models ranging from short feasibility studies and testing services to larger research and innovation projects.

    Costs, intellectual property rights, confidentiality agreements, and access conditions are agreed on a case-by-case basis.

  • The facility is typically accessed as part of a collaboration with researchers and technical staff from SDU. Support is available throughout the project, including experiment planning, sensor training, data acquisition, and analysis.

    Access and scheduling are arranged in advance to ensure availability of equipment and personnel.
