New road into the University's main campus

A new road makes it easier for cars and safer for cyclists to travel around the Odense campus area. The road will be open for use from 15 September

Anyone who has experienced the long morning traffic jams on Niels Bohrs Allé know how congested the traffic around the Odense campus can be during periods of the day where many staff and students are heading to and from the campus.

From 7:00am on the 15 September, however, the time wasted behind the wheel will be cut to an absolute minimum with the opening of a new road from the west side of the campus from Munkebjergvej.

Drive from Munkebjergvej to the car parks

Everyone who usually parks in the cark parks on the west side of the campus (P3, P4, P5, P6, P7 & P8) can now drive directly from Munkebjergvej to the car parks, considerably easing the pressure from the Niels Bohrs Allé & Campusvej junction.

- Today, it takes a long time driving down Niels Bohrs Allé and Campusvej. With the new road from the west, however, both students and staff at SDU will save a lot of time every day, and it’s been highly anticipated for a long time, explained Tom Møenbo Gregersen, who is the area manager for Planning and Construction at SDU.

Safer for bicycles

If you are among those who usually park in the areas on the west side of the campus, please note that from 1 October, it will no longer be possible to enter the car parks via Campusvej, as Bøgeskovvej will be closed completely.

You will therefore have to enter from the western entrance. This is because the police have decided Bøgeskovvej must be closed for safety reasons.

Additionally, please note that P9 will be closed from 14-19 September due to the Semester start party.

- We do understand that it may initially feel as an inconvenience as it may take a little time getting used to the new traffic routes on the campus area. But all in all, it will eventually become a huge win for everyone, as it will lead to a reduction in traffic jams while also making it safer to ride a bicycle around campus, Gregersen explained.

Even more parking spaces to come

With the new road and the changes its opening will entail, it will not only become easier getting into the campus - it will also lead to more parking spaces. The car park P1 on the east side will be expanded by an additional 120-130 spaces.

Additional parking spaces are also planned along the new western road for spring 2017.

- All in all, we expect that both the traffic diversion and additional parking spaces will make it easier to get around by car and bicycle around campus. It will hopefully also be easier finding a parking spot once we have gotten used to the new layout, Gregersen said.

Ask helpers if in doubt

Initially, there will be helpers standing by to advise anyone in doubt about which way to enter the campus from.

Gregersen encourages everyone to help each other out and have patience during the initial period, where the traffic flow will be closely monitored to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.

Any questions about traffic or parking can be directed to Teknisk Service.
