JUST SOCIETY

Everyone deserves to live in a just society in which each person is socially and economically secure, and where the state is politically, legally, and administratively inclusive and fair.

JUST SOCIETY is an interdisciplinary project that aims to promote equality by strengthening the rule of law, access to justice, and redistributive public policies through teaching, research and public engagement.

From legal, sociological and political perspectives, we explore the intersection of the institutions that shape street-level encounters between state and individuals in relation to access to justice and to redistributive public services and benefits. We aim to strengthen accountable and inclusive institutions that uphold the rule of law and provide equal access to welfare.

We are offering "The Rule of Law and Equal Access to Welfare" in 2024! EXTENDED DEADLINE: 10 MARCH!

JUST SOCIETY is offering our research-based interdisciplinary course on the rule of law and equal access to welfare in 2024! The course applies an innovative approach that integrates learner-centred teaching in a flexible online format. The course has been developed in close collaboration with partner universities in Brazil, Georgia, India and South Africa.

JUST SOCIETY: The Rule of Law and Equal Access to Welfare

Deepen your understanding of challenges to equal access to welfare

JUST SOCIETY offers an interdisciplinary and comparative course that deepens your knowledge and understanding of the rule of law, rights and welfare policies globally.

You will investigate the conditions of (in)equal access to rights and welfare from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives together with students from different countries and various disciplinary backgrounds such as law, political science, public administration, sociology and social work.

The course will enable you to contribute actively to the advancement of just welfare states.

JUST SOCIETY: The Rule of Law and equal access to welfare

An interdisciplinary comparison of welfare states with the Nordic Model as a starting point

In this course, you will learn how to compare welfare policies and principles of constitutional law to assess welfare policies in your own and other emerging welfare states.

With the Nordic Model as a starting point, you will be introduced to legal and social science approaches to analysing and comparing welfare states globally.

You will learn how to apply an interdisciplinary perspective to identify and discuss strengths and weaknesses of the rule of law and welfare policies, and to critically discuss legal, social and political implications of unequal access to welfare.

JUST SOCIETY: The Rule of Law and equal access to welfare

A novel learning experience through blended learning and nano-modules

The course applies an innovative teaching approach that combines flexible online modules and learner-centred interactive sessions.

The course consists of nanos that break “normal” teaching activities into short accessible units that allow you to learn about equal access to welfare whenever and wherever. Nanos comprise a mix of short video lectures, readings as well as individual and group-based exercises.

The nanos are combined with an onsite induction workshop, continuous feedback and teacher-facilitated online discussion seminars. The course is taught by an interdisciplinary group of international professors and scholars.

Critical reflection, interaction and continuous feedback are the key course values.

JUST SOCIETY: The Rule of Law and equal access to welfare

Take part in an international community of students from across the world

As a student in the JUST SOCIETY-course, you will become part of an international cohort of students from across four continents.

The course forefronts students’ perspectives, knowledge and experiences and facilitates important comparative discussions among the students from partner universities in Brazil, Georgia, India and South Africa.

You will have the opportunity to participate in a cross-country virtual conference where you meet and discuss your exam projects on (in)equal access to rights and welfare across the four countries.
