The vision of ProjectZero is a CO2 neutral Sønderborg region in 2029 – a vision that Christian Eriksen, MSc (Eng) in Mechatronics, works hard to realise. 
‘Together with my colleagues I try to cut CO2 consumption on all fronts: We involve citizens and companies; build wind turbines and biogas plants and launch sustainable energy projects’, says Christian Eriksen about ProjectZero, which is supported by the municipality and local industry.
Project manager for engineering initiatives
As a project manager Christian is in charge of a number of projects designed to pull the Sønderborg region in an energy efficient direction.
‘I am responsible for the building of wind turbines on land, the installation of biogas plants, and for implementing green district heating. At the same time, it is my job to update and monitor the energy balance – i.e. to estimate how the sustainable energy production matches the energy consumption of the region’, he says and continues:
‘My engineering background is vital in the technically difficult projects, because it enables me to understand our challenges and to calculate the energy balance’.
Perspective and user surveys
With an engineering degree in mechatronics Christian has also learned to involve the users and to identify their needs through, for example, surveys and workshops – skills that come in handy as a project manager.
‘The range of the degree enables me to enter into the many different projects and to keep a sense of perspective’, he says and continues:
‘During our studies we cooperated a lot with companies and that made it easier to get a job after graduation’.
