My ongoing PhD project Comical Modernity. Popular Humour and the Transformation of City Space in Late Nineteenth-Century Vienna combines urban history with history of popular culture and explores how the urbanization and experience of modernity were negotiated and dealt with humour. By examining how urban environment and life in the city were discussed in various printed matters such as jokes, puns and cartoons my aim is not only to look at how the urban life was represented in humorous accounts but to approach them as something that sprung from the lived experience in the city and sheds light to the complexity of everyday life in the transforming urban milieu. My research interests include urban history, humour, spatiality, gender, nineteenth-century popular culture and modernity.
