New grant for research into the ethical use of AI in healthcare
Professor Anne Gerdes from Department of Design, Media and Educational Science receives 3.7 million from Independent Research Fund Denmark to the research project " Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Danish Healthcare ", which aims to promote an ethically responsible development and implementation of artificial intelligence in the Danish healthcare sector.
The Danish healthcare system faces a dilemma: there is increasing pressure to rapidly adopt artificial intelligence (AI), while at the same time there is a significant need to address the ethical challenges that follow its use.
The project “Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Danish Healthcare” incorporates both patient and healthcare professional perspectives and consists of three interconnected components:
- An investigation into patients’ views on AI in the context of breast cancer screening.
- An analysis of how AI affects healthcare professionals’ responsibilities and clinical judgment.
- The development of guidelines and tools to support interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and AI developers in creating ethically sound AI solutions.
The aim is to ensure that both patients’ perspectives and professional experiences are included in the development of AI, and that the technology is applied in ways that uphold clinical quality and ethical integrity.
In addition to project lead Professor Anne Gerdes, the research team includes Benjamin Schnack Rasmussen, Clinical Research Lead at the Centre for Clinical Artificial Intelligence (CAI-X) and physician, PhD student Frederik Duedahl.
