How is Biology structured?

The master’s programme in Biology is studied over 2 years, and each academic year is divided into 2 semesters. There are opportunities for exchange stays and company projects during the course of study, and you have the chance to specialize in areas such as acoustic communication and behaviour, nature conservation and biodemography, ecology and environmental management, or ecotoxicology and chemical regulation.

In the semester overview below, you can see the structure of the education in tabular form. On small screens, the overview is best viewed in landscape format.

Choices and options

Already in the first semester of the master’s programme in Biology, you have great opportunities to shape your academic direction through a constituent elective module. This provides you with a solid foundation to delve into the biological fields that interest you the most.

In the second semester, you have full flexibility, as there are no mandatory courses. This opens up particularly good opportunities to go on exchange abroad or engage in close collaboration with a business or organisation in a company project.

The second year of the programme is primarily dedicated to the master’s thesis. Here, you can dive into a topic you are particularly interested in – whether through interdisciplinary work, in-depth research, or collaboration with a company where you contribute to solving real-world issues. If you have not already completed a company project in the second semester, you can undertake a 30 ECTS company project in the third semester and reduce the thesis to 30 ECTS.
