I didn’t know exactly what I wanted – but I knew I wanted to work internationally

Bennet Eulenberger is a management consultant at the consulting firm Capgemini Invent in Finland. With a double master’s degree from SDU Sønderborg and Europa-Universität Flensburg, he now works with organisational transformations, market analyses, and business development in Nordic and international contexts.

“I didn’t start my master’s programme with a clear idea of what I wanted to do afterwards. That developed more gradually along the way. What did become clear to me, however, was that I wanted to work in an international context and in larger organisations. That was also something my education prepared me well for.

Today, I work as a management consultant at Capgemini Invent. Overall, we help companies with transformations. What that involves can vary greatly. Sometimes it is about change management and getting people on board during transformation processes. Other times, it is more about project management or analyses, where companies need an overview of a market or a specific sector.

Recently, for example, I worked with business development, where we were trying to win a new project. The client wanted a market analysis of the Finnish energy sector, and my role was primarily to conduct desk research and gather knowledge about the sector, ongoing projects, and development trends. Together with the team, I helped prepare a proposal outlining how we would approach the task and which internal resources would contribute. It is very much a joint effort, and I worked closely with more experienced colleagues who provided guidance along the way.

I didn’t start with a clear idea of what I wanted to do afterwards. But along the way, it became clear to me that I wanted to work in an international context and in larger organisations.

One of the things I use directly from my master’s degree is the ability to grasp economic and statistical data. I took a course called Trends in Applied Economics in which we went through complex economic models. Understanding new data and information has been highly relevant for my work. In addition, I use the research and presentation skills from my studies – the ability to find information, assess it, and translate it into something others can use. This is very similar to working with theses and larger academic projects. Last but not least, I took several English courses tied closely to professional and academic contexts, which is beneficial for feeling confident in my language abilities in international environments.

What motivates me most in my work is the opportunity to learn new things and develop professionally. Consulting is a broad field, and you are not locked into a single role or industry. At the same time, I can see that there are good long-term opportunities for greater responsibility and leadership. For me, it has not been about having a fixed plan, but about discovering opportunities along the way – and being reassured that there are many different paths you can take with this degree.”
