Become an Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EiR)

Do you have experience with startups, investment, or business development? SDU’s EiR program gives you the opportunity to engage in research-based innovation projects with commercial potential – and help shape the spin-outs of tomorrow.

Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EiR) is a program where entrepreneurs collaborate with researchers and business developers at SDU to mature research projects with commercialization potential. 

As an EiR, you contribute with strategic input, assessment of market relevance, and feedback on business models – and you get the opportunity to explore your role in an early-stage innovation environment.

As an EiR, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Contribute with strategic input and commercial assessment
  • Explore potential roles in early-stage innovation projects
  • Engage in dialogue with researchers and SDU’s business developers
  • Help shape future spin-outs
  • Possibly become a co-founder, if the right match is found

The program is flexible and based on mutual expectations. The level of engagement is tailored to each case and can range from informal conversations to more structured processes. Limited compensation may be available for relevant involvement.

SDU continuously develops research-based technologies with commercial potential. On IN-PART, you can explore current cases that are open for collaboration.

Overview of the EiR pathway

  • Potential EiR profiles are continuously assessed in relation to SDU’s research projects with commercial potential. As part of the introduction, you will gain insight into the program, and together we will determine whether there is a possible match with current or upcoming cases.

  • As a candidate for EiR, you will be introduced to relevant research projects and teams. Background material and a case overview will be shared, and initial meetings will be held to clarify interests and competencies.

  • Through conversations with researchers and business developers, expectations and potential contributions are aligned. There may be several meetings and presentations before you, as an EiR candidate, choose to engage in one or more cases.
  • When there is agreement to proceed, SDU formalizes the collaboration with an agreement outlining the framework and expectations. The engagement can last up to 12 months and is continuously adapted to the needs and development of the case.
  • Together with SDU’s business developers, we evaluate the collaboration. The evaluation provides clarity on outcomes and next steps – and can serve as a basis for continued dialogue.
