Merit guidelines for scientific staff

In 2024-2025, a working group set up by the executive board has drawn up a framework document for merit recognition of scientific staff. After a consultation process in April-May 2025 with HSU, the University Council, the Central Equality Committee and the academic councils, the document was finalized and approved by the executive board in September 2025.

  • The common framework must:

    • Set the direction for SDU's academic employees' merit recognition
    • Create greater transparency
    • Encourage local discussions and the preparation of concrete guidelines at faculty and institute level
    The guidelines clarify the progression between academic levels – assistant professor, associate professor and professor – and define categories such as research, teaching, acquisition of external funds, communication and innovation that are included in the assessment.
  • SDU wants a more holistic evaluation, where qualitative methods supplement quantitative metrics for evaluating research. The guidelines must modernize the merit system across SDU and support the strategy's focus on retaining, developing and recruiting talent as well as creating excellent research and teaching environments.

  • Responsibility for implementation lies with departments and faculties.
