Horizon 2020 - EU's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation replaces the former 7th Framework Programme. Horizon2020 is aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness and addressing the challenges facing our society, by supporting research and innovation. Horizon 2020 is running from 2014 to 2020 with a budget of approx. 70 bn. EUR. The programme is structured into 3 pillars: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges. - Excellent Science: The first pillar focuses on Excellent Science to raise the level of excellence in Europe's science base and ensure a steady stream of world-class research to secure Europe's long-term competitiveness. The research proposals are pure bottom-up. The programme has budget of 22.3 bill bn. EUR. This pillar includes the instruments: Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, European Research Council (ERC), and Future and Emerging Technologies (FET). For more information and open calls click here.
- Industrial Leadership: The second pillar in the Horizon 2020 aims at making Europe a more attractive location to invest in research and innovation, by promoting activities where businesses set the agenda. The programme has a budget of 15.6 bn. EUR. The instruments in this pillar are: Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technology (LEIT), Access to Risk Finance, and Innovation in SME’s. - Societal Challenges: The third pillar under the Horizon 2020 reflects the policy priorities of the Europe 2020 strategy and addresses major societal concern e.g. within Health, Energy, Transport etc. Activities have a challenge-based approach aiming at bringing together resources and knowledge across different fields, technologies and disciplines. - Support funds for Horizon 2020 – EUopSTART: EUopSTART offers grants for the preparatory work of Danish businesses and knowledge institutions with a view to participating in selected European and international research programmes – such as Horizon 2020. The grant covers salary, travel expenses and funds for consultancy. A maximum size of a grant is 150,000 DKK.
