The Nordic Council of Ministers

The Nordic Council of Ministers

Benefitting Nordic countries

Every year about five hundred different projects and activities are carried out in the Nordic countries with support from the Nordic Council of Ministers. A common feature of all projects is that they provide a particular benefit for the Nordic countries, since the principle of ‘benefitting Nordic countries’ lies at the heart of all projects financed by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

In other words, should you collaborate with other Nordic researchers, it makes good sense to explore whether the Nordic Council of Ministers might offer a subsidy that could support your project. You can find an overview of subsidies offered by the Nordic Council of Ministers in the areas of education and research on Norden.org.

A wide range of sources for financial support of Nordic projects

In addition to the Nordic Council of Ministers, its subsidiary organisations and the Nordic Council, there are also a number of other Nordic foundations and organisations that support Nordic projects. On Norden.org an overall list has been compiled focusing on Nordic collaboration.

NordForsk

NordForsk is an agency set up under the Nordic Council of Ministers to finance Nordic research collaboration and to provide advice about Nordic research policy. The agency builds upon those national priorities that already exist  in the individual countries. While NordForsk funding covers  costs relating to collaboration at the Nordic level, the research itself is funded nationally.

Financial support from NordForsk is to be seen as top-up  funding for collaboration between researchers who already receive support from their respective research councils. Nordic funding can help to raise already substantial existing research investments to a Nordic level. There are also examples of common Nordic programmes that have been initiated using a common Nordic funding pool .

NordForsk funding operates using open calls for proposals.
Open calls can be seen on NordForsk’s homepage and on NordForsk’s application portal.
