Carl Johan Wingren appointed new Head of Department, Chief Forensic Pathologist and Professor of Forensic Medicine at SDU

Carl Johan Wingren has been appointed Head of Department, Chief Forensic Pathologist and Professor of Forensic Medicine at the Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Southern Denmark.

His work will focus on strengthening the links between operations, research and development within forensic medicine. Through a more data-informed and systematic approach, the department will continue to enhance quality, research and innovation for the benefit of the police, other commissioning authorities and collaborative partners.

Forensic medicine is a cornerstone specialty that plays a vital role in both the administration of justice and public health. Carl Johan Wingren aims to further develop the field based on high professional standards, transparency and a strong scientific foundation. He also sees considerable potential in strengthening collaboration between the university, the healthcare sector and the justice system, as well as expanding interdisciplinary partnerships across the University of Southern Denmark.

The professorship is based at the Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Southern Denmark.

Academic background

Carl Johan Wingren joins SDU from a position as Deputy Chief Forensic Pathologist and Associate Professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine, University of Copenhagen. Throughout his career, he has held senior positions within both Swedish and Danish forensic medicine, including serving as Consultant Forensic Pathologist at the Swedish National Board of Forensic Medicine and as Research Leader at Lund University.

In his new role, he will continue his work to develop research, education and public sector services within forensic medicine while strengthening the interaction between these areas.

The appointment takes effect on 1 August when he assumes his position as Head of Department, Chief Forensic Pathologist and Professor at SDU.

Academic profile

For many years, Carl Johan Wingren has worked with forensic medicine, quality development and development and implementation projects carried out in close collaboration with public authorities. He has built up extensive experience from both the Swedish and Danish forensic medicine systems and has contributed to the advancement of both research and professional practice within the field.

In particular, he has focused on strengthening the connection between research, quality development and societal application, while promoting a more systematic and data-informed approach to the development of forensic medicine. Throughout his career, he has emphasised the importance of cross-sector collaboration and the development of innovative solutions that can be translated into practice for the benefit of both research and society.
