Borregaard’s research has centred on and will continue to focus on patient-reported outcomes in treatment, as well as the long-term clinical and organisational results of patient care. This includes aspects such as readmissions, mortality, return to work, and patients’ own perceptions of their health following treatment.

Her research primarily targets individuals with ischaemic heart disease (commonly caused by atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries) and survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Supporting relatives also constitutes a significant focus of her work.

Additionally, she will continue to advocate for enhanced research communication to ensure that knowledge reaches not only other researchers but also the wider public, including the patients targeted by the research. Through her professorship, she is also establishing the Cardiac Health Outcomes Research Group, Odense (CORO).

Since 2021, Borregaard has served as an associate professor at SDU, as well as a clinical researcher and nurse at the Department of Cardiology at OUH. Her dual role as clinician and researcher has been a defining feature of her career. She also emphasises the importance of conducting research in interdisciplinary groups, fostering collaboration across professions, which is reflected in her extensive partnerships with various professional groups in both research and clinical settings.

Her strategic efforts to strengthen research are evident in her leadership of interdisciplinary research projects and collaborations within international research networks. She has held positions in several committees under the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and has developed strong research partnerships, particularly in Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Borregaard has published over 100 peer-reviewed scientific articles in international journals and has secured significant research funding, including a grant of 7.5 million DKK earlier this year from the Novo Nordisk Nursing Research Programme for the LICA research programme, focusing on improving life after surviving cardiac arrest.

At 40 years old, Borregaard graduated as a nurse from University College Lillebaelt, Odense, in 2008 and earned a Master’s in Public Quality and Management from SDU in 2012. In 2019, she completed her PhD in Health Sciences from SDU, with a dissertation on optimising patient pathways following heart valve surgery.

Privately, she lives in Odense with her husband Torben and their two-year-old son, Harvey.
