The Faculty of Science is primarily located at SDU Odense, but also has education and research activities in Kolding and Vejle, as well as research facilities in Kerteminde and near Faaborg.

Key figures

  • The Faculty of Science currently offers 13 bachelor’s programmes: 11 in Odense and 2 in Vejle. In addition, the faculty offers 13 master’s programmes: 12 in Odense and 1 in Kolding. Some programmes are offered in collaboration with other faculties at SDU.

    Applications

    The Faculty of Science received a total of 1,939 applications for bachelor’s programmes in 2025 (as of 5 July 2025). Of these, 23.1 % had a science programme at SDU as their first choice.

    For master’s programmes, the faculty received 1,532 applications (as of 1 March 2025). Of these, 78.3 % had a science programme at SDU as their first choice.

    Admissions

    Overall, the Faculty of Science admitted 794 full‑time students in 2024 (as of 1 October 2024), distributed as 518 bachelor’s students, 546 master’s students, and 7 students 7 students on the now discontinued academic supplementary programme in Climate Adaptation. The faculty also admitted 21 students to minor subjects and single‑subject courses.

    Student population

    As of 1 October 2025, the Faculty of Science had a total of 2,523 full‑time students.

    Graduates

    In 2024, a total of 550 students graduated from full‑time programmes at the Faculty of Science. The distribution was 307 bachelor’s graduates and 252 master’s graduates, including 9 graduates from the now discontinued academic supplementary programme in Climate Adaptation.

    PhD programme

    The Faculty of Science awarded 40 PhD degrees in 2024 and had 196 PhD students at the end of 2024.

  • As of 30 September 2025, the number of employees at the Faculty of Science was 702 full-time equivalents, of which 476 were in academic positions (including PhD students) and 227 in technical-administrative positions.

  • Research at the Faculty of Science is organised into 4 departments, a PhD School, 11 research centres, and a large number of other research units.

    In addition, many of the faculty's researchers are affiliated with a number of interdisciplinary centres and other cross-cutting initiatives.

The Faculty's history

From the establishment of the then Odense University in 1966, there was a Faculty of Natural and Health Sciences. However, natural science research only took place to the extent necessary to provide medical students with research-based teaching in natural science disciplines. It was not until 1974 that the Faculty of Science was established as an independent main area.

In the 1990s, the faculty introduced several engineering programmes, which led to the faculty being renamed the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

In 2006, when the University of Southern Denmark merged with the Odense University College of Engineering, it was decided to divide the Faculty of Science and Engineering. This resulted in the Faculty of Science in its current form.
