Voluntary organisations as tourism operators

What are the challenges and potentials of cross-sectoral collaboration between voluntary organisations and tourism businesses in the development of tourism-oriented activities? This PhD project investigates this.

About the PhD project

There is a tendency for the desire for active experiences and challenges to be important when choosing a travel destination.

Public authorities therefore believe that there is a potential in the development and implementation of nature-based outdoor activities for tourists and that voluntary organisations can play a central role in this context by collaborating with tourism operators.

Overall, voluntary associations are the country's largest provider of leisure activities, but their activities are aimed at the members of the committed communities that characterise Danish associations. Their operational sphere and normal target groups are thus far from the tourism sector and tourists who stay at the destination for a shorter period of time.

The project will investigate the challenges and potentials of cross-sectoral collaborations between voluntary organisations and the tourism sector in the development of tourism-oriented outdoor activities. This includes how the collaborations are initiated, organised and work, as well as how they create value and how sectoral differences play a role in the collaborations.

The project is conducted as a case study in Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality and Varde Municipality.

The PhD project started in 2017 and was completed in 2020.
