Research Seminar May 8

PROGRAM

12:00-13:00

FNUG joint lunch – come and join us for an informal lunch before the seminar begins (bring your own food)

13:00-13:45

Presentation by Keith Devlin, Emeritus Mathematician at Stanford University, Adjunct Professor at University of Southern Denmark:
Instruments to play mathematics

Abstract:
The piano (like most musical instruments) is a wonderful device to learn about music. You sit at the same instrument the pros use; you learn as you go, at your own speed; your ears tell you when you are wrong and how (no need for an instructor to grade you, though guidance can help); you can get better by trying harder compositions on the same device; and you don’t have to master the arcane notation until later. It’s fun and rewarding from the very start. It’s learning through playing. We can do the same for learning mathematics. We just need to design and build the instruments. I’ll show you some.

Postersession

14:00-14:45

Poster prototyping – Hands-on facilitated process of creating posters. Participants are encouraged to make individual posters and exchange knowledge with each other. Students are welcome to present posters introducing their projects, while research staff can share recent work, network activities, new research interests, valuable resources, or meaningful research findings.
