Induction Programmes and Mentoring

Presentation by Lasse Riis Jensen (UCN), based on his PhD project investigating how induction programmes and mentoring contribute to newly qualified science teachers’ development of professional identity during their first years in school. Specifically, he will present the key findings from a scoping review mapping existing research on the individual and structural factors within induction programmes that incorporate mentoring for newly qualified (science) teachers, and how these factors support or challenge the development of professional identity.

Mentoring and Teacher Induction: Supporting Newly Qualified Science Teachers in Their Transition into the Profession

Presentation by Jens Jacob Ellebæk, UC Syd, og Birgitte Lund Nielsen VIA, based on a CESE project examining how newly qualified science teachers experience NAFA's teacher induction initiatives in relation to the development of their professional identity and their commitment to remaining in the profession, as well as the challenges and opportunities they identify when establishing themselves as science teachers.

With regard to mentoring, the presentation will focus particularly on third space mentoring (external mentoring) within these induction programmes, where new science teachers meet and collaborate across schools. The project's findings point to considerable complexity in how mentoring works. Through in-depth case studies, the project explores the conditions and mechanisms that influence how mentoring and other forms of support contribute to newly qualified science teachers' transition into and establishment within the profession.
