New POLIMA PhD student from the University of Crete

PhD project focusing on strong light matter interactions exploring Mie-Exciton systems using primarily Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy.

Minoas Chairetis began his academic journey from the University of Crete. He attained his bachelor’s degree in the Material Science Department in 2021 and completed his bachelor thesis under the supervision of Professor Pavlos Savvidis in the Microelectronics Research Group of the Physics Department. The thesis delved into the fabrication as well as general characterization of Perovskite crystals to make them suitable for future polaritonic devices. 

In 2023, his master’s degree was once more attained in the Material Science Department and again under the supervision of Professor Savvidis. This work was a continuation of the bachelor thesis and regarded optimization techniques of the fabricated perovskite crystals so as to be embedded into DBR cavities and explore strong light-matter interaction between the excitonic emission of the perovskite material and the photonic modes created by the DBR cavity. The project ultimately led to publication in Light: Science and Applications due to its novel depicted phenomena.

At present, Minoas has joined the POLIMA group as a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Christos Tserkezis and co-supervision of Dr. Sergii Morozov. He will be exploring new and prominent Mie-Exciton systems for strong light matter interactions by exploiting Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. He already has experimental exposure in fabrication of 2D materials and spectroscopy, a fact that can prove helpful in the trial and error of the systems that he will be delving deeper. These systems hold prominent importance on strong light matter coupling due to their intrinsic properties, and further study is needed to prove their impact.
