POLIMA Celebrates the Successful Defense of MSc Student Frederik W. Christensen
POLIMA joins Frederik W. Christensen in celebrating the successful defense of his MSc thesis on June 8. Frederik’s thesis explored the incorporation of quantum-mechanical effects into the optical response of complex plasmonic structures composed of multiple nanoparticles. The work was supervised by Assistant Professor P. André D. Gonçalves.
As part of his ambitious project, Frederik developed a computationally efficient approach capable of simultaneously describing multiple electromagnetic scattering between plasmonic spheres while accounting for leading-order quantum corrections to their optical response. To achieve this, he developed his own T-matrix code (a method for describing multiple scattering) and augmented it with d-parameter-corrected scattering coefficients that capture key quantum corrections to the plasmonic response of nanoparticles. The resulting framework provides a powerful and agile tool for studying quantum corrections in clusters of nanoparticles, as well as the associated plasmon-enhanced light–matter interactions.
Beyond its value as an advantageous computational tool, Frederik’s work has the potential to support future experimental research in quantum nanoplasmonics and to aid in the interpretation of complex experimental data from systems involving multiple interacting nanoparticles.
