POLIMA celebrates its 100th scientific publication

'Velocity-Tunable Exciton-Photon Hybridization in Cathodoluminescence' in Advanced Functional Materials

By Sergii Morozov, , 8/7/2026

The Center for Polariton-driven Light-Matter Interactions (POLIMA) has reached an important milestone with its 100th scientific publication. The landmark paper, Velocity-Tunable Exciton-Photon Hybridization in Cathodoluminescence, has been published in Advanced Functional Materials, one of the world's leading journals in materials science.

Reaching 100 publications reflects the rapid development of POLIMA since its establishment and the strong collaborative research environment built across the center. It is also a testament to how far our experimental capabilities have advanced, enabling research that addresses fundamental questions in light-matter interactions while meeting the highest international standards.

The publication is particularly special because it is an entirely in-house achievement. The work brings together expertise developed within POLIMA, spanning materials assembly, theoretical modelling, and advanced cathodoluminescence experiments. Contributions from several PhD students, together with close collaboration across the center, made the project possible, highlighting both the breadth of expertise and the collaborative culture that define POLIMA.

In the study, we demonstrate that exciton-photon hybridization can be tuned continuously simply by changing the energy of an electron beam. Rather than modifying the material or fabricating different optical cavities, the electron velocity itself becomes a new external control parameter for light-matter coupling. This establishes a versatile free-electron platform for studying and controlling excitonic phenomena at the nanoscale.
