NFO18
5 POLIMA members participated in NFO18 in Brno, Czechia
NFO18, one of the most important and traditional conferences in nanophotonics and near-field optics. Ida Juliane Bundgaard, Sven Ebel, Christian Nicolaisen Hansen, Eduardo Dias and Christos Tserkezis stayed in Brno for the entire week, combining attendance of high-quality presentations with sightseeing and social activities. The picturesque city of Brno offered interesting architecture, important building and monuments marking the history of central Europe in the past 1000 years, and excellent dining opportunities, all within walking distance. POLIMA members were involved in both internal-team bonding activities and relaxed interactions with friends and collaborators from AMOLF, ICFO and even SDU NanoSyd, among others!
Regarding the scientific part, the conference started with an advanced summer school on Sunday. Keynote and invited talks were given by founders of the field of near-field optics, as well as emerging leaders in the field. On the POLIMA side, Ida and Christian presented a poster based on their work on quantum corrections in plexcitonics on Monday, while Christian presented a poster on his most recent results on image polaritons in graphene on Tuesday. Thursday was dominated by POLIMA, with Sven, Christos, and Eduardo giving back to back talks on different experimental and theoretical aspects of electron-beam spectroscopies and in particular cathodoluminescence. The day ended with Ida giving an exciting talk on her most recent work about structural colours in transition-metal dichalcogenides.
Both NFO regulars (Christos, Eduardo) and newcomers (Christian, Ida, Sven) agreed that the conference was an excellent experience on both the scientific and the social part, and are looking forward to the next edition in August 2028.
