Abstract:

The discovery and engineering of new phases of matter are essential to the evolution of quantum technologies. Two-dimensional materials present an unprecedented platform for designing interactions between charge carriers. In this talk, we will dive into the emergence and control of correlated electronic phases in interfaces of atomically thin van der Waals materials. We discuss the experimental realization in two distinct and exciting platforms. The first are heterostructures of transition metal dichalcogenides, where collective photon emission signals the ferroelectric ordering of excitons near a Mott insulating state. Second, and equally captivating, is the control of the full magnetic phase diagram in two-dimensional layered magnetic semiconductors by exploiting the interplay between magnetic, electronic, and structural properties.
