Master's in Mathematics

The Master's in Mathematics is a research-based program that helps build the expertise needed to teach mathematics at the upper secondary level, including programs such as EUX, HF, HHX, HTX, and STX.
The program is primarily aimed at individuals who already hold a Master's degree in a field within the natural sciences or technical disciplines, and who wish to become upper secondary school teachers and teach mathematics.
It is also suitable for those who are already teaching at least one other natural science subject at the upper secondary level and wish to be qualified to teach another subject.
The Master's program in Mathematics is offered every two years. Learn more about the program and application here.

PhD Courses

NAT201, Practice-Based Science Education Research and Communication, a NAFA PhD course, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Visual Design, The Royal Danish Academy, runs in the fall of 2026.
This course offers introductions to, exercises in and reflections on the methodological approaches of practice–based research with a particular focus on arts– and design-based research. The course introduces a cluster of methodologies which all interrogate doing in research. These methodologies are arts-based research, design research, research-creation, action research, performance as research and practice as research – and they all explore the entanglements of making, doing, and knowing in academic work.
Students will, among other things, gain insights into the methodologies of practice–based research, be capable of analyzing and discussing the specific advantages and challenges of applying practice–based research approaches in a PhD project and, develop an understanding of and strategies for how practical experience can be integrated into academic knowledge production.
ECTS credits: 3
Level: PhD
Teachers responsible: Connie Svabo, FNUG, Silje Alberthe Kamille Friis, lektor, Det Kongelige Akademi
Additional teacher: Lars Bang Jensen, VIA University College

PhD Seminar on Mathematics and Science Education. This PhD seminar aims to support PhD students’ research on mathematics and science education. It mainly focuses on the facilitation of PhD students’ understanding of theories and how to use and position theories in PhD studies and projects.
ECTS credits: 4
Level: PhD
Teachers responsible: Chunfang Zhou, Dorte Moeskær Larsen, FNUG

Research training programme in Science and Mathematics Education and Communication

The research training programme in Science and Mathematics Education and Communication (SMEC) provides training within the key areas researched at the Centre for Research in Science Education and Communication.

There are five main research areas with the SMEC programme:

  • Integrated STEM education and learning
  • Design and implementation of interdisciplinary STEM curricula from primary to tertiary education
  • Teacher education and professional learning
  • Relations between formal and informal learning settings
  • Transformation of scientific information into accessible understandable knowledge for the public

Read more about SMEC here.

Outside of SDU

Outside of SDU, Dorte Moeskær Larsen teaches at the Copenhagen University. In KA-STEM-education she contributes to the module The Mathematical Modelling Sciences.

FNUG's postoc Karina Kiær and PhD student Tina Maria Brinks also teach at university college UC SYD to teacher trainees.

In addition, our researchers are invited to other Danish and international universities as guest lecturers.
