NiSE webinar, 8 September 2026, 2:00-4:00 PM

Across international research and development initiatives, mentoring and
inductionprogrammes are increasingly recognised as key mechanisms for
supporting newly qualified teachers and strengthening their development of
a professional identity.

Yet questions remain about how induction and mentoring can best be organised
and implemented, and which individual and structural factors can support new
science teachers' well-being, professional development, and retention in the
profession.

These questions form the focus of thisNiSE webinar, where researchers and
practitioners will present current researchon the topic. Through presentations
and participant discussions, attendees will be invited to reflect on the
opportunities, challenges, and experiences associated with supporting newly
qualified science teachers in the early stages of their careers.

PROGRAM
14:00-14:10

Welcome by moderator, Martin Sillasen, who will introduce the three speakers

14:10-14:55

Induction Programmes and Mentoring

Presentation by Lasse Riis Jensen (UCN), based on his PhD project investigating how induction programmes and mentoring contribute to newly qualified science teachers’ development of professional identity during their first years in school. Specifically, he will present the key findings from a scoping review mapping existing research on the individual and structural factors within induction programmes that incorporate mentoring for newly qualified (science) teachers, and how these factors support or challenge the development of professional identity.

(Including 10 minutes of discussion)

15:00-15:50

Mentoring and Teacher Induction: Supporting Newly Qualified Science Teachers in Their Transition into the Profession

Presentation by Jens Jacob Ellebæk, UC Syd, og Birgitte Lund Nielsen VIA, based on a CESE project examining how newly qualified science teachers experience NAFA's teacher induction initiatives in relation to the development of their professional identity and their commitment to remaining in the profession, as well as the challenges and opportunities they identify when establishing themselves as science teachers.

With regard to mentoring, the presentation will focus particularly on third space mentoring (external mentoring) within these induction programmes, where new science teachers meet and collaborate across schools. The project's findings point to considerable complexity in how mentoring works. Through in-depth case studies, the project explores the conditions and mechanisms that influence how mentoring and other forms of support contribute to newly qualified science teachers' transition into and establishment within the profession.

(Including 10 minutes of discussion)
